Video of the Week - No Time
This week, we look at one of the possible pieces for next year's holiday concert. No Time is a women's piece that comes from the camp meeting tradition. Camp meetings were revivalist services that incorporated gospel music, jazz, traditional spirituals, and hymns into the service. No Time is a lyrical ballad, with the women in four parts. At this time, this is a possible lead-in to the candlelit processional.
BASED OFF OF THE PMEA RUBRIC IN YOUR FOLDER, EVALUATE THE CHOIR'S PERFORMANCE
- The Milwaukee Choral Artists are a professional, all female choral ensemble from Wisonsin. What do you notice about their posture, their sound, and their accuracy that might lead you to believe that they are all professional musicians?
- The piece was recorded in a large church at Concordia University in Wisconsin. Even though the room echos a lot, can you understand their words. Why or why not?
- What do you think of the piece? Is this something that fits the style of what we do? If you are a middle school chorus member, is this something that we can accomplish within the course of a concert season?
- Using some of the descriptors on the adjudication form, what is different about the sound of an all-female group from that of a mixed chorus (Women and Men together)? What are some of the challenges that need to be overcome to perform a piece effectively with all higher voices?
- Be sure to answer the questions using some of the terminology on the adjudication form provided to you in class.
