Video of the Week - Russian Red Army Choir - Kalinka

The Red Army Choir (also named the MVD Ensemble), is an Official Academic Ensemble of the Ministry of the Interior of the Russian Federation. The ensemble carries on the tradition of choirs and ballets of the Soviet Red Army, with singers, musicians and dancers. There are two groups that are allowed to be call the Red Army Choir.  The second, also called the Alexandrov Ensemble, is an all male choir that also carries on the Russian Choral Tradition.

USING THE EVALUATION VOCABULARY FROM THE ADJUDICATION FORM (PROVIDED IN CLASS), EVALUATE THE CHOIR'S PERFORMANCE IN THIS VIDEO

1. How would you describe their sound? Does the voices blend well? Are the vowels consistent? Do they make it sound easy?

2. Using some of the things we emphasize in class, how you would evaluate their posture, their jaw placement (is it open? is it closed? Does it look like the space in the back is high?), and the singers' facial and body expressions?

3.  Dance is an accompanying part of their performance.  How does the dance complement what is going on musically?

4.  There is a certain level of artistry to create the mood of the piece. What mood do you think they are trying to convey? How does they do that in the way they sing the piece?

4. Be sure to answer the questions using some of the terminology on the adjudication form provided to you in class.

Compose your answers in 1-2 paragraphs of approximately 5-8 sentences, and submit either online at:
